Cooper City -- Early History of Cooper City

There is a lot of history in East Cooper City.  Afterall, Morris Cooper started what was to become the Cooper City of today right in this area.

He sold the property to the Golf Course's  original owners with the codicil in the deed stating the property will be a Golf Course "into perpetuity"!   His wish was to keep the Golf Course for the residents to enjoy as a game and socially.

Did you know that BAFFY WOODS is named after the  No. Five Woodie?

Our first police department met in what is now Johnnies Sports Bar and City Hall was in the convenience store next to it?

Morris Cooper donated or sold to the School Board the whole parcel of land occupied by the  Cooper City Elementary School?

The American Legion has its piece of land and our City Hall has its piece of land.  While the utilities and water department were on 51st Street now occupied by the parking compound and Public Works.

The Community Center is now constructed over the former City Swimming Pool area known as Briar Patch Park.

Morris Cooper intended for the hub of the City to be located in this area.

90th Avenue is really Morris Cooper Drive.

A famous model and Hollywood movie star owned the property facing 90th Avenue from 50th Place north to the next street?
She modeled for Maxwell House Coffee and many other products of her time.  Her husband was a producer and her son later became a Hollywood producer as well.  She occupied the home until she had to go into an assisted living facility.

Another famous movie star, Linda Lovelace, who starred in "Deep Throat" was the daughter of Morris Cooper's secretary.
They lived on 52nd Street.

Do you recall interesting stories about early Cooper City?  If so, call Gladys Wilson, 954-434-1047, or e mail her at rwilsonatcc@cs.com.  We are interested in all the early history of Cooper City, the cattle farms, the orange groves, early  residents and where they lived and what they did in the City, etc.  Where the first homes were built and who occupied them.

When and how the Optimists began their good works with our children?  Who were involved?  How all our many parks got
started?  Why and where?  Why some of the interesting names of the parks?  Briar Patch, Bear Patch, Dog Patch?

Our Volunteer Fire Department and how it began and by whom?

We will share this information with you, the readers, as well as compiling it for the City's  Historical Rooms at the Pool and Tennis Center which were recently named for our former City Clerk, Susan Bernard.

It will be interesting  to learn everything we can  about our City's history.

You can also click on to our Comments and add your stories there.  We look forward to hearing from you because this will be a very interesting project  to share with  everyone.
